Tigers Split Double Header, Win Series Over New Orleans

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis baseball team split a double header with the University of New Orleans on Saturday at Maestri Field, dropping game one 6-1 before taking the series finale 12-10 to clinch the road series win.
The Tigers improved to 11-11 overall with the win while the Privateers fell to 9-10 on the season.
"Fantastic battle by our guys," head coach Matt Riser said. "Tough one there in the first game against a good arm, but we reset for game two and the guys did an awesome job of that. The fight in this club, man. They continue to fight and find a way. It was an all-around gutsy effort and great weekend to come in here and take a series."
Game One: Memphis 1, New Orleans 6
HOW IT HAPPENED
• New Orleans got the offense going early in game one. The Privateers put up a run in the first and added a pair in the second to take an early 3-0 lead.
• The Tigers got on the board in the top of the third on an RBI single shot back up the middle by Austin Baskin.
• The Privateers added a pair in the top of the fourth and got their sixth run in the bottom of the eighth inning on a solo shot by Diego Villescas. New Orleans held on and won the first game of the day, 6-1, to even the series.
NOTABLES
• Pierre Seals went 2-for-4 in the loss.
• Baskin drove in the lone run of the game and ended the contest 1-for-4, extending his on-base streak to 34 games dating back to last season.
• Will Marcy and Jacob Compton each logged a hit.
• Starting pitcher Luke Ellis took the loss to drop to 0-2 on the year after going 5.0 innings and allowing five runs (three earned) on nine hits, striking out three.
Game Two: Memphis 12, New Orleans 10
HOW IT HAPPENED
• A sac-fly by Marcy in the second inning got the Tigers on the board. A two-run single by Seth Cox scored Brennan DuBose and Alex Fernandes to add a pair and give Memphis a 3-0 lead.
• A solo home run by Daunte Stuart to left field that jumped off the bat at 108-miles-per-hour put the Tigers up 4-0. A double steal executed to perfection later in the frame gave Memphis another run when Jake Curtis stole second and Seals took home.
• Baskin blasted his third home run of the season with one out in the top of the fourth to put the Tigers up 6-0. UNO responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth on back-to-back bases-loaded walks and added a third run in the fifth on a ground out to make it 6-3.
• Seth Cox went yard in the top of the sixth to extend the lead back to four before the Privateers rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the frame, capped off by a two-run shot by Mitchell Sanford to tie the game at 7-7.
• DuBose responded in the top of the seventh with an RBI single through the right side that scored Seals to give the Tigers an 8-7 lead. In the eighth, Memphis added a pair of runs on an RBI single by Compton and a double off the center-field wall by Seals to go up 10-7.
• An RBI single and a second game-tying, two-run home run by UNO's Sanford tied the game once again at 10-10 in the bottom of the eighth.
• A two-out, two-run single by defensive replacement Shane Cox in his only at-bat of the game drove in Tyler Heckert and Baskin to give the Tigers a 12-10 lead.
• In the ninth, a leadoff walk to UNO's Bryce Calloway set the Privateers up with a base runner before DuBose back picked to first and got him for the first out of the inning. Closer Brayden Sanders struck out the final out of the game to earn his second save of the series and fifth of the season.
NOTABLES
• Kylan Stepter earned his first win of the season pitching 2.1 innings of relief, striking out four.
• Sanders notched his fifth save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning.
• Seals notched four hits in the win (4-for-6) with three runs scored and an RBI.
• Seth Cox ended the game 3-for-5 with three RBI, a run scored and a walk.
• Baskin, Stuart and DuBose all tallied a pair of hits in the win and all three drove in a run.
• Baskin extended his on-base streak to 35 games dating back to last season.

• The Tigers head to Starkville, Mississippi on Tuesday for a midweek game with Mississippi State (14-6) at 6 p.m.
