Tigers Put Up 13 Runs, Beat Red Wolves in First of Two Season Matchups
Mar 13, 2024 | Baseball
The Tigers improved to 9-10 on the season with the win while the Red Wolves dropped to 11-7 overall.
"I thought we did a really good job of putting back-to-back strong midweek games together," head coach Matt Riser said. "To get back on track and sweep a pair of different midweek opponents was good to see. We swung the bat well and really pitched well out of the bullpen."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Red Wolves got to Tiger left-hander JT Durham for three runs in the first inning on a three-run shot by Cason Tollett. However, the Tiger offense picked him up and responded with six runs of its own in the bottom half of the frame.
• An RBI double by Tiger center fielder Will Marcy got the scoring started for Memphis before Austin Baskin drove him in with a single to left field. Jacob Compton walked and then Pierre Seals deposited a three-run shot into the parking lot in left-center field. Seth Cox made it back-to-back jacks for Memphis with a solo shot down the left-field line to put the Tigers up 6-3 after an eventful first inning.
• Arkansas State got a run back on a sac-fly in the second inning, but Memphis piled on three more right away in the bottom half of the frame. A two-run home run by Daunte Stuart and an RBI single by Cox gave Memphis a 9-4 lead after two.
• A pair of bases-loaded walks issued by Durham gave the Red Wolves two runs in the top of the third to cut the Tiger lead to three.
• Marcy's second RBI double of the game in the bottom of the third gave Memphis its 10th run of the contest before Baskin drove him in for a second time with another RBI single to make the score 11-6.
• Stingy relief pitching by both bullpens slowed the high-scoring pace down and both teams posted zeroes on the board until the bottom of the seventh inning when Compton doubled off the left-center field wall to score Stuart all the way from first. A sac-fly by Alex Fernandes later in the inning gave Memphis its 13th run of the night.
• The Red Wolves got a run in the top of the ninth on a pinch-hit solo home run by Nyan Hayes, but that was all they got as the Tigers took it by a final of 13-7.
NOTABLES
• Baskin logged the fifth four-hit game of his career and sixth multi-hit game of the season, finishing the night 4-for-5 with a double and two RBI to extend his on-base streak to 32 games dating back to last season.
• Four Tigers tallied two hits apiece: Curtis, Marcy, Seals and Cox.
• Curtis went 2-for-5 with a walk, a pair of runs scored and his fourth steal of the year from the leadoff spot. He moved from shortstop to the mound in the seventh inning and recorded the final nine outs of the game to earn his first save of the season (3.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 3 K).
• Seals hit his sixth home run of the season, drove in three runs and drew a walk.
• Marcy ripped a pair of doubles and drove in a pair in the win.
• Cox homered for the second night in a row and his third of the campaign, driving in a pair.
• Fernandes, Stuart and Compton all recorded a hit. Stuart drove in a pair of runs while Fernandes and Compton drove in one apiece.
• Freshman Malik Harris earned the win for the Tigers to improve to 2-0 on the season. He went 2.1 innings, allowing no runs on two hits, striking out a pair and walking a pair.
• Tonight's scoring output marked the sixth time this season the Tigers have scored 13 or more runs.
UP NEXT
• The Tigers hit the road Thursday for a three-game weekend series in New Orleans, Louisiana, against the University of New Orleans (8-8) Friday through Sunday.
