Tigers Snap Losing Skid with 16-Run Outburst in Seven-Inning Win
Mar 12, 2024 | Baseball
The Tigers improved to 8-10 on the season with the win while the Lions fell to 6-10 overall.
"We did a really good job of putting pressure on their defense tonight," head coach Matt Riser said. "The little things make the big things happen. We did the little things right to create some positive situations and outcomes. We were much more aggressive on the bases and played a lot more free tonight."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Lions struck for a run on the third pitch of the game when Jackson Ferrigno homered over the center-field batter's eye. It proved to be the only run of the contest allowed by right-handed starting pitcher Cade Davis, who pitched excellent en route to his first win as a Tiger.
• Memphis responded in the bottom of the first with a three spot to jump out to a 3-1 lead and never looked back. Daunte Stuart doubled down the right-field line, driving in Jake Curtis and allowing Will Marcy to come in on the throw from second. An RBI single through the right side of the infield by Jacob Compton scored Stuart for the third run of the inning.
• A single by Alex Fernandes and a throwing error by the UNA right fielder allowed Brennan DuBose to score from second base and Fernandes to reach third, resulting in a sac-fly by Curtis the very next batter as the Tigers added a pair in the bottom of the second.
• Seth Cox launched his second home run of the season in the third inning – a two-run no-doubter to left-center field to put the Tigers up 7-1.
• It was Cox again in the fifth inning who started the scoring in a six-run frame, lacing an RBI single to right field to score Pierre Seals. An opposite-field solo home run by DuBose scored the second run of the inning. A double steal by Curtis and Fernandes forced a throwing error by the Lions' catcher and allowed Fernandes to score unearned before Compton drilled a two-run single down the right-field line. That led to a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch by Cox to force in another run and give him his fourth RBI of the night to put Memphis on top, 13-1.
• The Tigers tacked on three in the sixth – the first of them coming on a wild pitch that allowed Fernandes to score. Austin Baskin ripped a two-run double just inside the third-base bag that scored Curtis and Will Marcy, giving Memphis a 16-1 lead.
• Jackson Lyons recorded the final six outs in the win. The Lions scratched back for a run in the top of the seventh, but it wasn't enough as the Tigers won it by run rule in seven innings, 16-2.
NOTABLES
• Davis went 5.0 innings and allowed one run on six hits, striking out a career-high seven batters and issuing no walks to earn the first win of his Tiger career and improve to 1-3 on the season.
• Cox went 2-for-3 with a home run, a walk and four RBI.
• Compton ended the night 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored.
• Baskin went 1-for-4 with a double, a walk, a run and a pair of RBI to extend his on-base streak to 31 games dating back to last season.
• Marcy had a pair of hits and a pair of walks from the two-spot in the lineup including a double.
• Stuart tallied his team-leading ninth double of the season, drove in a run and scored once.
• DuBose slugged his fourth long ball of the season – already doubling his total from a season ago.
• The Tigers drew nine walks and were hit by five pitches as a team. They also went four-for-four on stolen-base attempts.
• 16 runs marked a new season high for the Tigers and was the fifth time this year they have scored 13 or more runs.
