Tigers Even Series with 14-13 Walk-Off Win Over Bowling Green
Feb 24, 2024 | Baseball
The Tigers improved to 3-4 on the season with the win while Bowling Green dropped back under .500 to 2-3.
"College baseball, man. Wild. As wild as it gets," head coach Matt Riser said. "Not pretty by any means, but like we told the guys, you have to win at all costs. Find a way to get it done and get even in the series, and obviously we did that. At the end of the day, we came up with some big hits there in the ninth and pushed across two runs to walk it off. That's the kind of game that can get this mojo going a little bit."
In a drama-filled game, the Tigers jumped out to a 10-0 lead after the fourth inning before seeing Bowling Green strike back for 11-unanswered runs. The Tigers and Falcons traded blows the rest of the way with Memphis finding a way to come out on top, 14-13, despite committing five errors defensively.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Memphis had the bats going early, striking for three runs in the first inning on RBI singles from Daunte Stuart and Jacob Compton.
• The Tigers added a pair in the second inning when Marcy drove in Riley Davis on a ground out. Memphis got its second run of the inning when Brennan DuBose pulled off a straight steal of home with two down in the inning to put the Tigers up 5-0.
• An RBI double by Seth Cox in the bottom of the third added another Tiger run before Davis launched a three-run home run to right-center field that gave Memphis a commanding 9-0 lead. An RBI groundout off the bat of Stuart in the fifth made it 10-0, Tigers.
• The Falcons got on the board in the fifth inning on a one-out grand slam by Nathan Archer to cut Memphis' lead to six.
• BGSU kept at it in the sixth inning and pushed seven runs (four earned) across the plate to make it 11-unanswered runs and take the lead.
• Memphis responded right away with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to regain a 12-11 lead, thanks to Marcy scoring on a wild pitch and a sac-fly off the bat of Stuart that scored Austin Baskin.
• Bowling Green added a run in the seventh and eighth innings to go back in front, 13-12.
• Pierre Seals was the first Tiger to reach with one out in the ninth inning after drawing a walk. That led to an infield single by Alex Fernandes and then an RBI single again off the bat of Davis for his third hit and fourth RBI of the contest that tied the game at 13-13.
• Davis stole second and the Falcons elected to intentionally walk DuBose to load the bases for Jake Curtis. Curtis reached on a fielder's choice when the third baseman threw home to get the force out for the second out of the frame. With the bases still juiced, Marcy played hero and walked the Tigers off as winners with a two-out RBI single to center field.
NOTABLES
• Left-hander Luke Ellis went five innings and was effective outside of getting touched up for a fifth-inning grand slam. Ellis went five full innings and struck out four while walking three, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits.
• Kylan Stepter made his Memphis debut after coming on to get the final two outs of the seventh inning. He went 1.2 innings and gave up one run on one hit, striking out a pair and walking two.
• Brayden Sanders came in to pitch the top of the ninth as the Tigers trailed by one. The Olive Branch, Mississippi native kept the Falcons at bay, striking out a pair.
• Davis went 3-for-4 on the afternoon with four RBI, a home run, a walk and three runs scored.
• Seals ended the game 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.
• Stuart drove in three runs and scored two, going 1-for-3 with a sac-fly.
• Marcy went 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI and three runs scored, including the walk-off RBI single.
• Baskin, Compton, Cox, Fernandes and DuBose all recorded a hit. Baskin scored a pair of runs.
