Tigers Defeat Bowling Green 13-7 to Take First Home Series of Season
Feb 25, 2024 | Baseball
The Tigers improved to .500 (4-4) on the season with the win while Bowling Green dropped to 2-4.
"I'm proud of how the guys bounced back after Friday night. That's two in a row… one more and they call that a winning streak," head coach Matt Riser said. "What JT Durham did to finish that game off and get his first career save [was huge]. I was proud of how the team collectively played well in all phases besides that middle inning."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Starter Caden Robinson gave up a pair of runs in the first inning on a pair of Falcon doubles, but the Memphis lineup backed him up and responded for a pair of its own in the bottom of the frame. An RBI single by Jacob Compton and a sac-fly off the bat of Daunte Stuart that brought in Will Marcy evened the game at 2-2.
• The game stayed scoreless until the Tigers broke through against BGSU starting pitcher Calvin Mitchell for eight runs in the bottom of the fourth. Memphis loaded the bases on a Compton single and back-to-back walks drawn by Pierre Seals and Riley Davis – who entered as a pinch hitter with a 2-1 count to Tiger Ryan Hunter who was making his first career start. Catcher Brennan DuBose stayed hot with the bat and delivered a no-doubt grand slam to put Memphis up 6-2.
• The Falcons used four pitchers in the inning as Marcy doubled in Jake Curtis, Austin Baskin walked and a dropped fly ball off the bat of Compton by the BGSU right fielder with two outs in the frame allowed Baskin and Marcy to score. That all led to a two-out double down the right-field line by Stuart that scored Compton to make it 10-2, Tigers.
• Memphis added a run in the fifth on an RBI single to right field by Curtis that scored Alex Fernandes who reached on a bunt single.
• The Falcons scratched back for five runs in the sixth to make it an 11-7 game, the bulk of them coming on a three-run home run by Leighton Banjoff.
• The Tigers punched back in the seventh with a pair of insurance runs on a two-run double by Curtis – his fourth hit of the contest – to make the score 13-7, which held to be final.
NOTABLES
• Curtis racked up four hits from the leadoff spot, going 4-for-5 with three RBI and a pair of doubles and runs scored.
• Robinson made his second start of the season on the mound for Memphis and went 5.1 innings. The sophomore right hander allowed five runs (three earned) with a pair of strikeouts and a walk issued to earn the win and go to 1-0 on the season.
• Durham pitched the final 3.1 innings of the game and earned the first save of his career while not allowing a hit and striking out four Falcons, walking just one. Of Memphis' four wins this season, Durham has been credited with two wins and a save.
• Fernandes ended the game 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored from the nine spot in the lineup.
• DuBose ended 2-for-5 with a grand slam and a double, driving in four and scoring twice.
• Compton went 2-for-4 with an RBI, two runs scored and a walk.
• Marcy and Stuart each logged a hit in the win. Marcy doubled and scored two runs while Stuart doubled and drove in a pair.
