Feb 26, 2024 | Baseball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis baseball team is back at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field on Tuesday and Wednesday as they welcome the Skyhawks of UT Martin to the Bluff City for a pair of midweek games. Both games are scheduled for a 4 p.m. first pitch with Tuesday's game available to stream on ESPN+.
The Tigers (4-4) took care of business in their home opener last Wednesday night (Feb. 21), defeating Central Arkansas, 14-4, in eight innings behind an offensive explosion that yielded a program-record seven home runs and 12 extra-base hits for Memphis. Austin Baskin and Pierre Seals both homered twice, and the Tigers totaled 43 bases in the win – the second most in program history and the most since logging 42 against Marshall in 2010.
Memphis carried the hot bats into the weekend in its series with Bowling Green at FedExPark where it scored 28 runs and took two out of three games from the Falcons.
Brennan DuBose went 5-for-14 (.357) on the week with a pair of home runs and doubles (.929 SLG%), including a grand slam in the series-clinching win over Bowling Green on Sunday and was named to the American Athletic Conference's Weekly Honor Roll on Monday afternoon for his efforts. DuBose also blasted one of a program-record seven home runs for the Tigers in their win over Central Arkansas on Wednesday. For the week, DuBose drove in six runs and scored five, walked twice and pulled off a straight steal of home in Memphis' 14-13 win over the Falcons on Saturday.
Memphis' opening-weekend rotation at Jacksonville State of David Warren, Luke Ellis and Caden Robinson combined to allow just five earned runs in 14 innings of work while striking out 13 Gamecocks and walking just five.
The Tigers rolled out the same rotation against BGSU over the weekend. Warren took the loss on Friday night before Ellis got a no decision in a 14-13 Memphis win Saturday. Robinson went 5.1 innings on Sunday to earn the win and go to 1-0 on the season. Brayden Sanders (1-0) was credited with the win for Memphis on Saturday while JT Durham (2-0) earned his first career save in 3.1 hitless innings of relief on Sunday to close out Robinson's win.
The Skyhawks (3-4) are coming off a series win over Brown last weekend where they took the first two games of the series before falling in Sunday's finale at Skyhawk Baseball Field in Martin, Tennessee. UT Martin won 12-2 in seven innings on Friday and 3-2 on Saturday before falling on Sunday 13-6.
Memphis leads the all-time series 36-6 and has won the past 10 meetings with the Skyhawks, including a 4-2 win at FedExPark last season. RHP Cade Davis (0-1, 9.64 ERA) will make his second start of the year on the mound for the Tigers on Tuesday afternoon. The Skyhawks will counter with fellow right-hander Choyce Diffey (0-0, 13.50 ERA).
