Tigers Sweep Sunday Doubleheader
Feb 18, 2024 | Women's Tennis
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis women's tennis team continued its early-season success Sunday afternoon with a pair of wins over Purdue and Samford at Leftwich Tennis Center.
The Tigers got the day going with their third-straight victory over a Power Five program, downing Purdue 4-2, before sweeping Samford 4-0 in the second match. With the wins, Memphis extended its win streak to four matches and sits at 8-3 on the year.
Action began against Purdue on the doubles court where the Tigers were already at an advantage after the Boilermakers had to default on court three. They then finished off the point on court one with a 6-2 win from Emily Meyer and Monique Woog.
Memphis automatically grabbed the first point in singles on court six with a default, then won the first set on four of the five additional courts. Redshirt junior Alice Amendola was the first Tiger to finish their match, winning 6-2, 6-2 from the fifth spot.
Purdue battled back with wins on courts four and one before Leonie Moeller finished off the Boilermakers in three sets (6-4, 1-6, 6-4) to clinch the victory at the No. 2 position.
In the second part of Sunday's doubleheader, Memphis completely dominated the Bulldogs.
Doubles action got going with No. 2 tandem Camila Soares and Moeller winning 6-2, followed by a 6-3 clinch from Miriam Grosmann and Amendola on court three.
The momentum carried into singles play, where the Tigers swept the first three matchups to finish off the win.
Moeller got the party started with a 6-1, 6-0 drubbing on court two. She was followed by a 6-4, 6-0 win from Soares on the top line and then Micah Pierce clinched the result, 6-4, 6-0, on court six.
