Tigers Knock Off Previously Unbeaten Mississippi State, 4-3

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The persistence of the Memphis women's tennis team led them to defeat the Mississippi State Bulldogs 4-3 Sunday afternoon at Leftwich Tennis Center.
Memphis (5-3) remained unbeaten at home, while handing the Bulldogs (6-1) their first loss of the season.
"Today's match was amazing," Memphis head coach Hayden Perez said. "The fight we showed was incredible. Mississippi State deserves credit for a great match, but in the end, we pulled it out. I'm very proud of this group and hoping we can duplicate days like this moving forward."
The Tigers went down early losing the first point, with Mississippi State winning doubles 6-3 at the No. 1 and 6-4 on court three.
In singles, Mississippi State extended its lead to 2-0 with a sweep on court two, however, the Tigers returned with two wins of their own to bring the score to 3-2.
Leonie Miller swept Mississippi State's Chloe Cirotte 6-1,6-3 on the second line, while Camila Soares outlasted Maria Rizzolo at the top spot to win 6-2, 4-6, 6-0.
Micah Pierce battled on court six to tie the score 3-3, winning 6-2, 3-6, 7-6(2). All eyes were on Alice Amendola on court five for the final battle.
Amendola and Alessia Tagliente went to tiebreakers in all three frames, but it was the junior Tiger who emerged with the clinch point 7-6(3), 6-7(6), 7-6(2).
UP NEXT
The Tigers are back on the road on Thursday to play Indiana and will be back home at Leftwich Tennis Center to play Purdue at 11 am.
