Jan 27, 2024 | Women's Tennis
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis women's officially opened the Leftwich Tennis Center with a 4-2 comeback win over rival Ole Miss Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers (2-1) lost the first two points of the day, but rallied to win the next four battles and get a signature win early in the spring season.
"We are super pleased, this was a signature win for our program," Memphis assistant coach Ryan Hammond said. "We've always had close matches with Ole Miss, but to get our first win over them today was special, especially in this building. It was a very special occasion.
"From top to bottom, one through six, we couldn't be more pleased with the overall performance and effort. All we ask of our girls is to have great attitude and effort and they brought both today."
Ole Miss (1-1) grabbed the first point with a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles and a 7-5 victory on court three. The Tigers had a 6-5 advantage with Emily Meyer and Monique Woog at the second spot when the point was clinched.
In singles action, the Rebels doubled their lead on court three with a 6-2, 6-1 win, but that would be all the visitors would get on Saturday.
Meyer got the ball rolling for the Tigers at the fourth spot with a 6-2, 6-3 win before Leonie Moeller evened the match at the No. 2 position in a three-set thriller 6-2, 2-6, 7-6(4).
Alice Amendola put Memphis in front from the fifth line with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 decision before Micah Pierce clinched the Tiger victory on court six despite falling in the first set. Pierce came from behind to earn the 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 clinch point.
