HONOLULU – The University of Memphis women's tennis finished off a split opening weekend with a narrow 4-3 loss to No. 24 Washington Friday in Honolulu.

"Today was a great college tennis match," Memphis head coach Hayden Perez said. "We competed hard, and we have a lot to be proud of. We will learn from this one and I feel confident this team is going to accomplish a lot this season."

Doubles was a battle throughout with Washington getting a 6-3 win at No. 2, before Alice Amendola and Miriam Grosman evened things up at the third spot, 6-4. The Huskies squeezed out a 7-6 (6) win on court one to snatch the doubles point.

In singles action, Washington added to its lead with a sweep on six. The Tigers responded with three straight victories to take a 3-2 lead.

Leonie Moeller won 6-4, 6-2 on court two. Camila Soares downed her opponent 6-2,6-4 on the top line and Amendola recorded a 7-5, 6-1 decision at the fifth spot.

Washington leveled the match on court three, before Melissa Sakar battled Monique Woog in three sets, ultimately dispatching the Tiger 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 to clinch the victory.

Memphis will return home next weekend to host Ole Miss on Saturday and Tulsa on Sunday at Leftwich Tennis Center.
