Tigers Set for AAC Tournament Matchup with Shockers
May 22, 2023 | Baseball
CLEARWATER, Fla. – The No. 6 seed University of Memphis baseball team is set for a first-round American Athletic Conference Tournament matchup with No. 3 seed Wichita State on Tuesday night at BayCare Ballpark in Clearwater, Fla.
First pitch scheduled for approximately 45 minutes after the conclusion of No. 2 seed Houston and No. 7 seed Tulane, which is slated for a 3 p.m. start. The game will be available to stream on ESPN+.
Memphis (28-26,10-14) finished its regular season at home with a series win over Tulane last weekend to finish sixth in the American – the highest finish for the Tigers since 2016.
"We got that final conference-series win and evened things up with Tulane this season," head coach Kerrick Jackson said. "Now we have to take the momentum we've created into the conference tournament and make a run deep into this thing and see if we can't find ourselves playing on championship Sunday."
The Shockers (30-23, 13-10) enter the matchup after dropping their final conference series of the year to UCF, two games to one. Offensively, Wichita State is led by AAC Player of the Year Brock Rodden (.360 BA, 16 HR, 61 RBI) and Chuck Ingram (.366 BA, 9 HR, 41 RBI).
The Shockers lead the all-time series with Memphis, 11-5, taking two-of-three games from the Tigers in Wichita earlier this season.
Memphis left-handed pitcher Dalton Fowler was named AAC Pitcher of the Year earlier today and was one of four athletes who received a unanimous First-Team selection. Lefty closer Dalton Kendrick joined him on the First Team, Logan Kohler was named Second-Team third baseman and Luke Ellis and RJ Jimerson were named to the AAC All-Freshman team.
