May 17, 2023 | Baseball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis baseball team is set to welcome Tulane to FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field for its final regular-season series before the American Athletic Conference Tournament on May 23-28. Games for this weekend are scheduled for 6 p.m. on Thursday and Friday night and 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Memphis (26-25, 8-13) traveled to Greenville, N.C., for a three-game AAC series with No. 14 East Carolina. The Pirates took all three games and handed out the first conference sweep of the Tigers this year. The weekend prior, the Tigers swept American Athletic Conference foe South Florida in Memphis to earn the first sweep of a conference opponent in a decade (May 4-5, Marshall; C-USA).
"It was a tough weekend for us [in Greenville], but we were playing against a really good baseball team," head coach Kerrick Jackson said. "Turn the page, learn from what we didn't do well this weekend, make some adjustments and try and pick up some momentum against Tulane heading into the conference tournament."
The Green Wave (14-37, 7-14) enter the matchup losers of four-straight games after being swept by AAC-front runner Houston in New Orleans last weekend. Offensively, ECU is led by Brady Hebert (.327 BA, 14 2B, 23 RBI, 11 SB) and Teo Banks (.272 BA, 12 HR, 36 RBI).
Tulane leads the all-time series with the Tigers, 70-45, after taking the series two games to one in New Orleans earlier this season. The Tigers carried a 5-4 lead over Tulane in the 11th inning of the Sunday rubber match before Tulane's Teo Banks hit a walk-off, two-out, two-run home run to give the Green Wave the series win.
Lefty closer Dalton Kendrick's 12 saves are tied for third in the NCAA, Brayland Skinner's six triples rank eighth in the country and lead the conference. He is also riding an 11-game on-base streak and ranks second in the American with 19 stolen bases. Lefty Dalton Fowler's 100 strikeouts rank No. 12 in the NCAA and lead the AAC.
Utility player Austin Baskin was named AAC Player of the Week on May 8 for his performances throughout that week. He batted 9-for-15 (.600) with two doubles, a home run, seven RBI, six runs scored and three walks (.667 OBP) for the week. On the year, Baskin has 21 extra-base hits and leads the team with 38 RBI. His nine home runs and 11 doubles are both tied for second on the squad.
