May 18, 2023 | Baseball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis baseball team took down Tulane, 14-2, in seven innings behind Austin Baskin's 4-for-4 day at the plate (8 RBI, 3 2B) at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field on Thursday night in game one of the Tigers' final regular-season series of the season.
With the win, the Tigers improved to 27-25 overall and 9-13 in American Athletic Conference play on the season. The Green Wave dropped to 14-38 (7-15) on the year with the loss.
"Great job by our guys tonight," head coach Kerrick Jackson said. "They came out and played from the first pitch to the last pitch. We got good pitching performances from Glenn [Green III] and [Luke] Ellis. Our hitters were locked in all night. Great job and now we'll look to come out and win the series tomorrow."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The first double of the day for Baskin came in the bottom of the first when he hit a ball into the left-center field gap and drove in Logan Kohler and Anthony Hansen. This tied the game at 2-2 after Tulane took the lead in the top of the first on a Teo Banks home run.
• A five-run fifth inning was started by Hansen's single that drove in Brennan DuBose after he singled to start the inning. Baskin then delivered his second two-run double of the contest and Will Spears drove in two more to give Memphis a 7-2 lead.
• The Tigers tacked on four more runs in the third inning to take an 11-2 lead. A bases-loaded walk by Hansen brought in the first Tiger of the inning, followed by a sac-fly off the bat of Baskin for his fifth RBI of the game. Spears then ripped a hanging curve ball into left field that scored two more Tigers and gave him four RBI for the game.
• Baskin came up to the plate with the bases loaded and two down in the bottom of the sixth and promptly unloaded them, driving in three more Tigers to make it a 4-for-4 day with three doubles and eight RBI.
• A three up, three down seventh inning with a pair of strikeouts for Luke Ellis sealed the Tiger win, 14-2.
NOTABLES
• Redshirt-freshman Glenn Green III started on the mound and improved to 5-0 on the season. He allowed a pair of runs on three hits over two innings and struck out three.
• Ellis earned his first save of the season and lowered his ERA to 4.42 over 38.2 innings pitched. He went five innings and allowed no runs on just three hits while striking out four.
• Baskin's eight-RBI game was the most by a Tiger since All-American Hunter Goodman drove in 11 runs against Western Illinois on March 1, 2020. In addition, it marked the team-leading 18th multi-hit game for Baskin this season and his third four-hit game to raise his season batting average to .303.
• Spears drove in four runs and went 2-for-4 at the plate.
• Kohler went 2-for-4 with a walk and scored three runs.
