May 14, 2023 | Baseball
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The University of Memphis baseball team fell in the series finale, 11-7, to No. 14 East Carolina on Sunday at Clark-LeClair Stadium to conclude a three-game American Athletic Conference series.
With the setback, the Tigers move to 26-25 (8-13 AAC) on the season. The Pirates improved to 38-14 (15-6) on the year with the win and have now won seven-straight games.
"It was a tough weekend for us, but we were playing against a really good baseball team," head coach Kerrick Jackson said. "Turn the page, learn from what we didn't do well this weekend, make some adjustments and try and pick up some momentum against Tulane heading into the conference tournament."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Pirates scratched a run across in the first inning to jump out to an early lead on a Josh Moylan sac-fly.
• ECU pushed across four more runs in the second inning to grow its lead to 5-0.
• Memphis got on the board in the top of the third when Austin Baskin was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in Brayland Skinner from third.
• The Pirates responded with two more runs in the bottom of the third and one in the fourth to take an 8-1 lead.
• An RBI single by Joey Berini and a two-run home run by Alec Makarewicz in the bottom of the sixth grew ECU's lead to 11-1.
• The Tigers got a run in the top of the seventh on a double steal and an error on the catcher. Skinner stole second, Shane Cox took third and the throw to second ended up in center field, allowing Cox to score.
• Memphis showed some fight in the eighth and scored three runs. Cameron Benson doubled in a pair of runs and Skinner drove in Tyler Heckert to make the score 11-5.
• Anthony Hansen slugged his team-leading 11th home run of the season with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. That made the score 11-7, which held final.
NOTABLES
• Hansen ended the game 2-for-5 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored to mark his 17th multi-hit game this year.
