No. 14 Pirates Take Game Two from Tigers
May 13, 2023 | Baseball
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The University of Memphis baseball team dropped game two to No. 14 East Carolina, 10-3, on Saturday at Clark-LeClair Stadium in a three-game American Athletic Conference series.
With the setback, the Tigers move to 26-24 (8-12 AAC) on the season. The Pirates improved to 37-14 (14-6) on the year with the win and have now won six-straight games.
"[Dalton] Fowler came out and pitched well for a good amount of time and at the end of the day they just played better baseball than we did," head coach Kerrick Jackson said. "They made big pitches when they needed to and got big hits when they needed big hits. We were out-hitting them for the majority of the game but just couldn't cash in on those."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Tigers and Pirates were locked in a pitcher's duel early, tied 0-0 until Josh Moylan gave the Pirates the lead with a solo home run in the fifth – just the second hit of the day for ECU at that point of the game.
• Tiger starter Dalton Fowler turned in another quality start and pitched into the seventh inning (6.1 IP). ECU's Luke Nowak delivered a one-out, two-run single to right-center field to give the Pirates a 3-0 lead and force the Tigers to go to the bullpen. A two-run home run in later in the inning by Carter Cunningham gave ECU a 5-0 lead.
• The Tigers responded with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning. Brayland Skinner singled to center field and stole second base – his 18th steal of the season. Logan Kohler doubled to right field and Skinner came around to score from second. The following at-bat, Kohler advanced to third base and scored on an errant throw to make the score 5-2, ECU.
• ECU answered with a five-run eighth inning to swell its lead to 10-2.
• A solo home run off the bat of Jonah Sutton with two outs in the ninth made it a final score of 10-3.
NOTABLES
• Sutton went 2-for-4 on the day with a home run – his third of the season.
• Kohler ended the day 1-for-3 with his 11th double of the year, an RBI, a walk and a run scored.
• Anthony Hansen doubled for his 20th extra-base hit of the season.
• Skinner ended the game with a hit, a run scored and his 18th stolen base of the season (No. 2 in AAC).
• Cameron Benson, RJ Jimerson and Austin Baskin all recorded a hit in the game.
• Fowler was tagged with the loss (5-5) and went 6.1 innings, allowing four runs on just three hits while striking out four to get his 100th strikeout of the season. Fowler ranked seventh in the country in strikeouts entering today.
UP NEXT
• The Tigers are back at Clark-LeClair Stadium for game three with East Carolina tomorrow with first pitch now scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
