MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis baseball team is back home Thursday and Friday night at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m. at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field for a three-game series with Cincinnati to kick off home conference play.
The Tigers (16-14, 1-2 AAC) opened American Athletic Conference play last weekend at Tulane where they fell in Sunday's extra-inning rubber match, 6-5. On Tuesday night, the Tigers fell to defending national champion Ole Miss, 7-2, at FedExPark in front of a sell-out crowd of 1,383 for the first meeting between the two programs on campus in Memphis since 2008.
"I'm really proud of how our guys played and battled this weekend," head coach Kerrick Jackson remarked after the weekend series at Tulane. "It's tough to come into an environment the first conference weekend and play as tough as we did. This is a learning point and we're going to grow from this and we will be better."
The Bearcats (12-18, 1-2 AAC) enter the series after dropping a mid-week game, 7-6, at Wright State on Tuesday. Cincinnati opened conference play hosting Wichita State last weekend and dropped the series two games to one, winning the Sunday finale, 9-8. Offensively, the Bearcats are led by Ryan Nicholson (.300 BA, 6 HR, 8 2B, 18 RBI) and Cole Harting (.244 BA, 5 HR, 19 RBI).
Memphis leads the all-time series with Cincinnati, 63-46, and the Tigers won two of three games with the Bearcats a year ago in Cincinnati.
First baseman Anthony Hansen has hit safely in 24-of-28 games this season and carries a team-high .336 average to go with a team-leading nine home runs (including a pair against Ole Miss and five in his last six games) and .447 on-base percentage. Austin Baskin is one shy of Hansen for the team lead in hits (36) and is batting .319 with a team-best eight doubles on the year, slugging four homeruns and knocking in 17 runs. In addition, Baskin has tallied a team-best 12 multi-hit games this season.
Lefty closer Dalton Kendrick continues to lead the country in saves (8) and sports a 35-to-6 strikeout to walk ratio while opponents are batting just .185 against him. The Tigers are 13-3 in games which Kendrick has pitched this season.
Half-season ticket packages are available at GoTigersGo.com, and single-game tickets are available here.
