Tigers Knocked Off by Bearcats in AAC Home Opener
Apr 06, 2023 | Baseball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis baseball team fell to Cincinnati, 6-2, in its American Athletic Conference home opener on Thursday night at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field.
With the setback, Memphis moves to 16-15 (1-3) on the season. The Bearcats improved to 13-18 (2-2) on the year with the win.
"We just have to keep coaching our guys up and pushing them to try and find out what makes them tick to get them to come out, be more competitive and play better baseball," head coach Kerrick Jackson said. "We have two more games left on the weekend and still have a chance to win the series. Hopefully, we come out tomorrow and give them a better competitive effort."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Tigers got out to an early 1-0 lead when Brayland Skinner doubled down the left-field line in the bottom of the first, driving in Austin Baskin who scored all the way from first.
• Cincinnati took the lead in the top of the second, scoring a pair of unearned runs with two outs.
• A four-run fourth inning by the Bearcats grew their lead to 6-1. All with two outs in the inning, a bases-loaded walk and a two-run single plated the first three runs. Then, a rundown between first and second base allowed the fourth run to score before the out was made to end the inning.
• In the ninth, Jake Curtis singled to right field to bring up Anthony Hansen. Hansen hit a long single to the left-center field wall that allowed Curtis to come around to score from first and make the score 6-2, which proved to be final.
NOTABLES
• Tiger starter David Warren took the loss but didn't allow a single earned run. Warren went 4.1 innings, allowed five hits, six unearned runs and walked four while striking out five in the loss to go to 2-3 on the season.
• Memphis southpaw JT Durham entered in the fifth inning and went the rest of the way (4.2 IP) in dominant fashion. Durham struck out six and allowed just one hit, striking out five-straight batters from the sixth through seventh innings.
• Skinner ended the night 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
• Baskin recorded his 13th multi-hit effort of the season, going 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored.
• Curtis finished 2-for-4 with a run scored from the nine spot in the order.
• Hansen tallied a hit and an RBI, and catcher Jonah Sutton also recorded a hit in the game.
