Apr 04, 2023 | Baseball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis baseball team fell to Ole Miss, 7-2, on Tuesday night at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field. In front of a sell-out crowd of 1,383, the Tigers and Rebels played on campus in Memphis for the first time since 2008 at newly renovated FedExPark.
With the setback, Memphis moves to 16-14 (1-2) on the season. The defending national-champion Rebels improved to 17-11 on the year.
"We gave them ten free bases… eight walks, an error and a hit batter – they scored five of their seven runs with two outs," head coach Kerrick Jackson said. "They did what they were supposed to do by playing clean baseball and we didn't. We just have to keep coaching our guys up to play a clean game. We're talented enough, but we need to get them to understand that they need to play more consistently at a high level."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Rebels jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a sac-fly and a two-out errant throw to first base.
• Ole Miss tacked on a run in the top of the third on a two-out single by Anthony Calarco.
• Senior Anthony Hansen got the Tigers on the board in the bottom of the third inning with a solo blast to right field on an 0-2 pitch to make it a 3-1 game.
• Behind an RBI double by Jacob Gonzalez, a two-run single by Kemp Alderman and a bases-loaded walk, the Rebels rallied with two outs in the fourth inning to push four runs across and extend their lead to 7-1.
• Hansen continued his great game at the plate with his second home run of the night on a full count to lead off the eighth inning The home run made it a 7-2 game and that score proved to be final.
NOTABLES
• Hansen ended the night 2-for-4 with a pair of home runs to provide life for the Tiger offense. It marked his fifth home run in the past six games to push his season total up to nine to lead the squad.
• The Tigers used nine pitchers in the game. Caden Robinson made his second start of the season and took the loss (1 IP, 2 R, 1 ER) to go to 0-1 on the year.
• Chase Kessinger, Luke Ellis, Jackson Lyons, Carson Stinnett and Hudson Ross combined to allow just two hits over the last five innings and kept zeroes on the board.
• Austin Baskin, Logan Kohler, Brayland Skinner, Jake Curtis and Kerry Herndon-Brown each recorded a hit for Memphis.
