Durham Dominates, Tigers Complete Season Sweep of Trojans
Mar 21, 2023 | Baseball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis baseball team defeated UA-Little Rock, 5-3, on Tuesday night at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field to complete the season sweep of the Trojans. Lefty starter JT Durham was terrific all night, throwing seven innings and racking up a dozen strikeouts to set a new career high and earn the win to move to 3-1 on the year.
With the win, Memphis improved to 12-9 on the season and has won back-to-back games. The Trojans dropped to 10-8 on the season with the loss, suffering two at the hands of the Tigers this season.
"Great job by JT [Durham]coming out tonight and holding it down for us," head coach Kerrick Jackson said. "We were a little lulled and asleep there early offensively, but he held it down until we got the bats warmed up. We played good defense for the most part, had a couple of bloop hits that were unfortunate for JT as he cruised through that thing… Great all-around win for us tonight."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Little Rock got the scoring started in the top of the fourth inning when Ty Rhoades drove in a run on a single back up the middle, and the Trojans made it a 2-0 lead when they scored a run on a wild pitch in the sixth inning.
• The Tigers wouldn't let Durham's pitching gem be spoiled, as they responded for three runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth. Logan Kohler doubled to left-center field to drive in Brennan DuBose, and RJ Jimerson came through with a two-out, two-run double down the right-field line that scored Kohler and Anthony Hansen to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead.
• Jake Curtis reached on an error by the shortstop to lead off the seventh inning for the Tigers. Freshman Kerry Herndon-Brown, seeing his first collegiate action, laid down a perfect sac-bunt to move Curtis to second to set up an RBI double by DuBose. A two-out single by Hansen plated DuBose to make it 5-2, Tigers.
• A two-out, pinch-hit double by UALR's Jaxson Anderson in the ninth drove in a run to make the final score 5-3, Memphis.
NOTABLES
• Durham retired the first 10 batters he faced, giving up his first hit with an out in the fourth inning. Dating back to last Friday's 4-3 Tiger win at Southeastern in which Durham hurled three perfect innings, he retired 19-consecutive batters before surrendering that hit.
• Durham ended the game with a career-high 12 punch outs and walked just one Trojan batter.
• Curtis moved from second base to the mound for the final two innings and earned his second save of the season. He also went 1-for-3 with a run scored at the plate.
• DuBose had a pair of hits from the nine spot in the order, including an RBI double – and scored two runs in the game.
• Hansen leads the Tigers with a .342 season-batting average and has hit safely in 17 of 19 games this season.
UP NEXT
• The Tigers are back at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field tomorrow night for a matchup with Arkansas State (7-12) with first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m.
