MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis baseball team is set for a noon first pitch on Wednesday afternoon at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field against Mississippi Valley State.
The Tigers (2-1) won their opening-weekend series with Samford. Senior outfielder Brayland Skinner went 5-for-12 (.417) in the series with all five hits being extra-base hits (four 2B, one HR) and was named to the American Athletic Conference's Weekly Honor Roll for his performance. Skinner's four doubles leads the AAC.
Mississippi Valley State enters the matchup with a 1-2 record after playing three games in the 2023 Cactus Jack HBCU Classic at Minute Maid Park. The Diamond Devils won their opening-day game with Texas Southern, 7-5, before dropping games to Jackson State and Grambling State.
"They're a competitive club who is going to play hard," head coach Kerrick Jackson said. "A lot of times, people overlook these HBCU teams, but these guys do a good job of coaching their kids up. They're athletic kids who have ability, so we have to make sure we come out and play clean baseball to give ourselves a chance to win the game."
All fans will receive free admission to Tiger home games in February and March, and kids ages 12 and under get in free all season long. Half-season ticket packages are available at GoTigersGo.com for all games beginning in April.
This weekend, the Tigers will start a four-game series against Youngstown State that includes games on Friday at 6 p.m., a double header on Saturday at noon and 3:30 p.m. and the series finale on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
