Tigers Explode For 19 Runs in Win Over MVSU
Feb 22, 2023 | Baseball
"I think I was six-for-six on quality at-bats, and that's what we focus on – quality at-bats lead to hits and success," Cox said. "It was my first start, so I was a little jittery that first at-bat, but I was confident and trusted in myself and my ability."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Diamond Devils jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first on a two-run double down the right-field line off the bat of Kyndell Dolphin.
• Memphis got on the board in the bottom of the second when catcher Jonah Sutton, making his first start of the season, blasted a solo shot to left-center field.
• MVSU struck back in the top half of the third on Dolphin's second double of the game, this time driving in Victor Figueroa. A double by Eric Johnson II brought Dolphin around to score and an RBI single by Kameron Byrd plated the third run of the inning to give the Diamond Devils a 5-1 lead.
• The Tigers got three of their own in the bottom half of the frame on a three-run homerun by freshman RJ Jimerson.
• Senior Anthony Hansen's two-run, opposite-field blast in the fourth inning gave the Tigers a 6-5 advantage.
• Dolphin continued his impressive game with an RBI single in the top of the fifth to tie the score back up at 6-6, but Memphis took the lead right back in the bottom half when Will Spears scored on a wild pitch.
• In the top of the sixth, MVSU scored on a Memphis wild pitch to even the score back up at seven-all.
• The Tigers exploded for six runs in the in the bottom of the sixth inning in what would prove to be the game's turning point. Singles by Sutton and Brayland Skinner and a walk by Spears loaded the bases for Cox, who cashed in on the opportunity with a grand slam to left-center field. An RBI-single by Jake Curtis and sac-fly by Jimerson made it a six-run inning and a 13-7 Tiger lead.
• A sac-fly off the bat of Curtis in the seventh made it 14-7, Memphis. MVSU scratched back for three runs in the top of the eighth inning to make it 14-10.
• A five spot in the bottom half of the eighth for the Tigers came on three runs scoring on wild pitches, a Cox single for his fifth RBI of the game and a Curtis RBI-double to deep center field, making the score 19-10.

• Left-handed pitcher Luke Ellis got his first start on the mound for the Tigers and went two innings, allowing a pair of earned runs on three hits and punching out a pair of MVSU batters.

• Dalton Kendrick pitched a perfect seventh inning for the Tigers (1 K).
