10-Run First Inning Dooms Tigers in 15-6 Loss
Apr 10, 2022 | Baseball
Memphis: 6, UCF: 15
WP: Zack Hunsicker (2-0)
LP: Blake Wimberley (1-4)
SV: N/A
How it happened:
- Four batters into the game, LF Lex Boedicker gave UCF a 1-0 lead with an RBI single, while 1B Ben McCabe followed with an RBI double one batter later
- That brought Sundean to the plate, who appeared to hit a three-run home run to left field before the call was overturned upon a Memphis challenge that Sundean's bat was illegal due to too much pine tar
- After both benches got very hot and Lovelady had to be held back from the Memphis dugout, the UCF manager was ejected, as was Wimberley
- A lengthy delay both to clear the field and check the rule book followed, and the umpires then reversed the overturn and gave Sundean the three-run home run, which made it 5-0 UCF
- The Knights added five more in the inning off of LHP JT Durham and led 10-0 after half an inning
- Memphis fought back and plated two runs in the second and another four in the third off of RHP David Litchfield (ND), who couldn't get through three innings despite a 10-0 lead
- An RBI single by C Tanner Booth made it 10-6 in the third and ended Litchfield's afternoon, while Hunsicker hit RF Blake Daniels with a pitch that opened his relief outing, which put the tying run in the on-deck circle, though the righty got LF Ian Bibiloni to ground out and end the threat
- Memphis put a runner in scoring position in four of the final five innings, but didn't score against a quartet of UCF relievers and never came closer than the tying run on-deck
- The Knights got two runs back in the fifth on a two-run single by SS Alex Freeland, his second two-run hit of the game, and added three runs in the eighth off of LHP Daniel Casto on a two-out, three-run home run by RF Pablo Ruiz, which made it 15-6, the eventual final
Notables:
- With a pair of doubles, DH Jacob Compton extended his on-base streak to 23 games
- Compton's 10th multi-hit game of the season tied him for the most on the team
- With two singles, SS Ben Brooks recorded his ninth multi-hit game of the season
Up Next:
- Memphis will head to Tampa for a three-game set vs. South Florida Thursday-Saturday, with first pitch Thursday set for 5:30 p.m.
- The Tigers next scheduled home game is April 26 vs. Mississippi Valley State
