Tigers' two-run ninth walks off Dayton in series win

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A two-run ninth inning capped a come-from-behind walk off win for Memphis as the Tigers took the series against Dayton with a 3-2 victory on Saturday at FedExPark.
Trailing 2-1 in the final frame, junior Ian Bibiloni led off the inning with a solo home run to left-centerfield to tie the game. Later in the inning, freshman Jaylen Wilbon sped home after a wild pitch to complete the comeback victory.
"(Bibiloni) was really good for us throughout the fall. He got off to a bit of a slow start but we stayed with him," head coach Daron Schoenrock said of the junior. "I wanted to give him some looks two days in a row as we've been mixing in some freshmen. He stepped up and got two really good swings off for us today."
It was the second time Memphis had to come from behind after trailing in the game. Facing a 1-0 deficit in the seventh, freshman Nick Jones led off the home half of the inning with a solo homer to knot the game at 1-1.
Bibiloni, who entered the day looking for his first hit of the young season, went 2-for-4 on with a double and a home run.
"Once I got the double, I broke the ice. Going into that last at-bat, I was looking to be a lead-off man and get on base," Bibiloni said. "Throughout the at-bat I just thought 'just see a fastball in the zone and put a good hack on it,' and it went."
Following Bibiloni's first home run of his Memphis career, Wilbon drew a walk. A sacrifice bunt and intentional walk ensued to put two aboard, while a fielder's choice in the next at-bat put runners on the corners. With junior Zach Wilson at the plate, a wild pitch sailed by the catcher, allowing a dashing Wilbon to plate the winning score.
On the mound, senior Takoda Metoxen earned the win in a masterful day by the Tigers' pitching staff. Junior Carson Stinnett drew his second start of the season, surrendering an unearned run in 5.2 innings of work with six strikeouts.
After senior Joshua Scheer struck out the lone batter he faced in the sixth inning, freshman Daniel Casto recorded three strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work and surrendered an unearned run. Metoxen then entered the game and threw 1.1 hitless innings while also recording strikeout.
"What a job by Daniel Casto," Schoenrock said. "A redshirt freshman facing the first tough-moment game he's been in. He was grinding out at-bats, and I thought he grew up a little bit in that middle relief role."
In all the Tigers' pitching staff registered 11 strikeouts and did not issue a walk. Saturday marked the first time the Memphis pitching staff did not surrender a walk in a game since Jonathan Bowlan's complete-game, 18-strikeout performance at USF in 2018.
Memphis' series finale against Dayton is set for Sunday at 1 p.m. at FedExPark.
