Memphis leads the overall series against Dayton by a 12-2 margin. This weekend's series will mark the first meeting between the two sides since the 1999 season, when the Tigers took a 2-0 neutral-site win. Overall, Memphis has won five of the last six games against the Flyers, including three straight victories.
In its last outing, Memphis dropped a 5-3 contest at Central Arkansas in the first road game of the season. A five-run second inning for the home Bears proved to be the difference as the Tigers chipped away but couldn't complete the comeback.
Offensively, shortstop Ben Brooks continued a strong start to his junior campaign. After hitting .455 last weekend, Brooks recorded a two-RBI outing at Central Arkansas on Wednesday and connected on his second home run of the season.
Fourteen newcomers have made their Memphis debuts over the first four games (eight position players and six pitchers). Redshirt freshman Jaylen Wilbon drew his second start at UCA and made it count, turning in a 2-for-4 night and plating a run. The Memphis native also posted his first career stolen base.
Last Friday night, senior LHP Danny Denz earned his fifth career win on the mound in the Tigers' 6-1 Opening Day victory against Xavier. The Carpentersville, Ill., native tossed five innings of no-hit baseball while striking out five. Denz, who is projected to earn the Friday night start against Dayton, set the tone early against Xavier, retiring the first nine batters of the contest and posted all five strikeouts in the first nine outs.
Dayton visits Memphis after a 3-1 weekend at the Seahawk Classic, hosted by UNCW. The Flyers posted a pair of wins against Bryant and split a pair of contests against host UNCW.
Senior LHP Hunter Wolfe garnered Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week accolades after helping Dayton to a win on its Opening Day. Wolfe tossed seven innings and surrendered just one run while striking out 14.
Five Dayton hitters posted .300 averages in the first weekend of play, led by Mariano Ricciardi. Ricciardi collected an 8-for-17 weekend (.471) and tallied a pair of RBI. Riley Tirotta, Benjamin Blackwell and Alex Brickman are tied for the team lead in runs driven in with six each. Overall the Flyers posted 32 runs in its four-game weekend opener.
