Tigers down Dayton in series opener
Feb 21, 2020 | Baseball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A six-run sixth inning propelled Memphis baseball to a 7-2 win in its series opener against Dayton on Friday afternoon at FedExPark.
Facing a 2-0 deficit, Memphis posted a run in the fifth inning to get on the board, while six runs on five hits in the sixth inning helped the Tigers complete the comeback win.
"(Dayton) is a quality team. The job Bailey Wimberley did on that lineup was outstanding. We handled the baseball well today defensively," head coach Daron Schoenrock said. "We generated some things offensively in that sixth inning. We pressured them and sped them up a little bit."
Juniors Ben Brooks and Chris Swanberg each drove in a pair of runs. Junior Zach Wilson tallied his first career multiple-hit performance in the Blue and Gray with a 2-for-3 day at the plate and a run scored.
On the mound, sophomore Wimberley tallied his third career win. The Eads, Tenn., native scattered four hits across four innings while also striking out four batters to keep Dayton off the board throughout his time on the mound.
"Bailey came in and stifled them. He attacked the zone," Schoenrock added. "That's how depth can help this team—when a starter falters a little bit like that, we have another guy go in. That was huge for Bailey today and huge for this team."
After falling behind 2-0, Memphis got on the board when junior Ian Bibiloni scored on a wild pitch in the fifth.
Building on the momentum, Memphis led off the home half of the sixth inning with four consecutive singles, including Swanberg's 2-RBI base knock. After Bibiloni helped plate Wilson later in the frame, an RBI ground out by freshman Braden Webb and 2-RBI single from Brooks gave Memphis its 7-2 cushion.
Out of the bullpen, sophomore Reed Harding kept Dayton at bay in the last two innings to help seal the win.
Game 2 of the weekend slate is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday at FedExPark.
