Tigers sweep Dayton with 9-2 win
Feb 23, 2020 | Baseball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis baseball completed a three-game sweep of Dayton on Sunday afternoon in a rain-condensed, seven-inning 9-2 victory at FedExPark.
At the plate, the Tigers struck for four runs in the second inning and three in the third to build an early cushion, while another strong pitching performance kept Dayton at bay.
Drawing his second start of the season, freshman Blake Wimberley scattered three hits and an earned run across four innings of work. The Eads, Tenn., native, whose brother Bailey Wimberley earned the win on the mound on Friday, also struck out six Dayton batters in his first career victory.
In relief, junior Logan Walters tallied the save after allowing just one hit in three innings of work while striking out five.
"We stacked up a lot of good at-bats, and we were really good on the mound again today," head coach Daron Schoenrock said. "We're throwing a lot of strikes, and that's where it all starts. We're getting ahead of a lot of hitters and we did a good job of that this weekend."
Offensively, Ben Brooks, Hunter Goodman, Ian Bibiloni and Zach Wilson all tallied a pair of hits. Brooks and Wilson each collected three RBIs, while Goodman added two runs driven in.
Bibiloni helped manufacture the game's first run after a leadoff single in the second inning. The junior then stole second base and later plated the first run of the afternoon on a wild pitch.
Building off the momentum, Austin Baskin drew a walk and Wilson followed with his first hit of the afternoon. Brooks then sent a three-run home run to left-centerfield, his third homer of the season, to increase the lead to 4-0.
After Dayton scored its first run in the top of the third, Wilson delivered with an opposite-field, bases-clearing double in the third to grab a 7-1 advantage.
"It's a good feeling. I've been trying to go opposite way and it worked out," Wilson said of his three RBI hit. "We didn't start off great last week but we came back. We never gave up and we got the sweep this week."
Goodman rounded out the scoring with a two-run homer in the fourth inning and help set the 9-2 final.
Memphis returns to FedExPark for its first home midweek contest of the year on Wednesday. The Tigers will take on Central Arkansas with a first pitch set for 4 p.m.
