Late-inning rally falls short as USF downs Memphis
Apr 27, 2019 | Softball
Ashley Threatt drove in three runs in the setback
TAMPA, Fla. – A late-inning rally fell short Saturday afternoon as the University of Memphis softball team dropped game two of a three-game series to USF by a score of 5-3. The setback moves Memphis to 22-28 overall and 3-13 in American Athletic Conference play.
Â
Memphis saw itself in a five-run deficit after giving up two runs in the first and three runs in the fourth to USF. Four straight hits in the top of the sixth inning, including a bases-clearing double by senior Ashley Threatt, cut that deficit to two to put pressure on USF.
Â
Delaney Smith opened the sixth with the first of the four consecutive hits and advanced to third on singles by Gracie Morton and Baylee Smith. With the bases-loaded, Threatt connected on a 2-2 pitch for her eighth double of the season.
Â
Memphis' sixth-inning rally proved to be the only time the Tigers got on the board against the Bulls. USF responded to the Memphis threat by retiring the side in the top of the seventh inning.
Â
Mariah Nichols was dealt the setback in 3.0 innings pitched for the Tigers. Bayleigh Wisher came in for 3.0 innings of relief. Alyssa Dean led Memphis with two hits.
