Dean Leads Memphis In Setback To USF
Apr 26, 2019 | Softball
Freshman Alyssa Dean registered her team-leading 15th conference hit on Friday
TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Memphis softball team opened the three-game series on the road at USF with a 2-0 setback Friday afternoon. Memphis drops to 22-27 on the year and 3-12 in American Athletic Conference play.
Â
The game quickly started in favor of the Tigers as Memphis loaded the bases with a pair of walks and a fielding error by USF. A line drive to left field, however, resulted in a double play to eliminate the scoring threat on third in Delaney Smith. USF's Georgina Corrick proceeded to get out of the inning without giving up a run on a strikeout.
Â
The Bulls responded with a run in the first on a pair of singles.
Â
Gracie Morton drew her second walk of the game in the third while Baylee Smith reached on a walk in the sixth. First base was as far as the two would reach as USF shut down the Memphis offense.
Â
USF added one more in the bottom of the fifth and threatened in the bottom of the sixth. With runners on first and second with two outs, junior third baseman Sara Ann Davidson made a diving play back to the bag to get the Tigers out of the inning without allowing a run. Â
Â
In the top of the seventh, freshman Alyssa Dean stepped up in a big way by breaking up Corrick's no-hitter. Dean was stranded at first as the first-place Bulls worked their way out of the inning.
Â
Karli Perque struck out two in 5.0 innings of work as she falls to 7-10 on the year. Bayleigh Wisher saw an inning of action for the Tigers in relief.
