Tigers edged by Lipscomb Wednesday
Mar 06, 2019 | Baseball
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A walk-off triple was the difference Wednesday afternoon at Dugan Field, as Lipscomb edged Memphis 3-2.
With a runner on first and two out in the bottom of the ninth, Lipscomb's Brian Moore sent a drive to the alley to score Maddux Houghton and grab the victory.
Memphis (4-7) led twice in the ball game, but Lipscomb (5-6) found answers. The Tigers struck first in the opening frame when Hunter Goodman singled, and an RBI base hit from Payton Marshall three batters later put Memphis on the board.
After a Lipscomb sacrifice fly provided the game's first tie, the Tigers regained the lead in the third inning. Goodman recorded his second hit of the day with a one-out single and then advanced around the bases on a pair of wild pitches. Alec Trela then drove in Goodman after reaching on an error.
Lipscomb responded again in the fifth on an RBI single. Both sides were kept silent in the sixth through eighth innings, combining for just four hits.
The Tigers found perhaps their best opportunity of the day in the top of the ninth inning. Nick Vaage sparked a go-ahead bid with a single. Jason Santana and Colton Neel drew back-to-back walks to load the bases, but a pop out ended the threat.
Memphis returns to action Thursday at WKU with a first pitch slated for 2 p.m. The remainder of the weekend series schedule against the Hilltoppers is currently to be announced.
