Offense shines as Tigers take series-opener at WKU

Four Tiger players collected multi-hit efforts. Memphis was aggressive on the base paths, swiping a season-high four bases. On the mound, junior Danny Denz picked up the win in his second start of the year. Colton Neel, who scored two runs on offense, notched his second save of the season.
Hunter Goodman (3-for-5), Jason Santana (2-for-5), Alec Trela (2-for-4) and Cale Hennemann (2-for-4) each enjoyed multiple hits on the day. Goodman and Santana each added an RBI, while Hennemann tallied a game-high three runs batted in.
Memphis (5-7) used five runs in the second inning to establish the advantage. A sacrifice fly by Keith Stepter put Memphis on the board. Ben Brooks followed with an RBI triple, his first of the season, and a wild pitch made it a 3-0 lead. Goodman then doubled to drive in a run, while another wild pitch pushed the lead to 5-0.
After WKU trimmed the lead to 5-3, a Jason Santana RBI double in the fourth and Hennemann's first RBI of the day in the fifth drove the lead to 7-4. In the seventh, Hennemann capped the Tiger scoring with a 2 RBI single.
WKU offered one final rally with two runs in the eighth inning, but Neel closed the door in the ninth.
Game 2 of the series is slated for 3 p.m. on Friday with the final game of the weekend anticipated for Sunday.
