MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis softball team concluded the UofM Softball Tournament Monday afternoon with a 4-2 victory over IUPUI at the Tigers Softball Complex. Monday's victory is the seventh-straight for Memphis as the Tigers improve to 12-9 on the year.
The Tigers have Ole Miss on the schedule Wednesday evening before hosting their final home tournament of the season next weekend.
IUPUI jumped on the Tigers early in the first, capitalizing on a pair of Memphis miscues. Two runs came around to score on a home run by Haley Ginger.
Memphis quickly answered in the home half of the first inning. Delaney Smith led the inning off with a single through the left side. During Gracie Morton's at bat, Smith stole second and third to put herself in scoring position. Ashley Threatt's ground out with one out scored Smith from third and a double by Ryleigh Aungst drove in Morton. The final run of the inning was driven in by Regan Hadley's bloop single down the left field line.
After three scoreless innings by both teams, the Tigers tacked on one more run in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out, Delaney Smith connected with a pitch and sent it over the fences in right field for her first collegiate over the fence home run. Smith had an inside the park home run during her freshman season.
Mariah Nichols came in relief for the Tigers in the first inning and ultimately hurled 7.0 innings of scoreless ball with five strikeouts. She was credited with the win.
