MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A pair of home runs by Ashley Threatt and Ryleigh Aungst propelled the University of Memphis softball team to a 3-2 victory over Indiana State Sunday afternoon. The Tigers are now winners of six-straight and improve to 11-9 on the year.
Karli Perque earned the start for the Tigers. After delivering a lead-off walk, Perque and the Tigers got out of the first inning jam against the Sycamores with a strikeout, foul out and fly ball to left field.
Perque rolled through the first three innings, allowing just one hit while fanning four. In the top of the fourth inning, however, a lead-off walk came around to score with an RBI-single down the right field line.
After the Sycamores took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth, Memphis promptly had an answer. Baylee Smith reached by way of a throwing error before Ashley Threatt used one swing of the bat to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead. In the next at bat, Ryleigh Aungst connected on her third home run of the season to increase the Tigers lead to two. The Tigers have hit back-to-back home runs in each of the last two games.
With runners on first and second with two outs in the top of the fifth, Bayleigh Wisher came in relief for the Tigers. Wisher retired her first batter by way of a foul out to Threatt at first.
Indiana State tacked on one run in the top of the sixth to cut the Tigers lead in half, but solid defense for the final three outs helped solidify the Tiger victory.
