Early deficit plagues Tigers in midweek setback

Murray State (1-3) plated five runs in the top of the first inning to build the early advantage. Although Memphis (1-3) answered on three occasions, the Racers never relinquished the lead.
After the big inning by the Racers, the Tigers found their first opportunity to answer with the bases loaded in the bottom of the first. Memphis scratched across its first run on a double-play groundout, but left a pair stranded.
Murray State extended its lead in the third, but Memphis began to claw back in the home half of the inning when Alec Trela scored Cale Hennemann on an RBI double. Payton Marshall notched his first collegiate hit with a double to lead off the fourth inning and scored on an error to close the gap.
The Racers plated three more in the top of the seventh before Memphis offered another answer in the bottom half of the frame. After Evan Bell led off the inning with a hit, Hennemann drove him in on a single. With the bases loaded, Trela then reached on a fielder's choice and an error plated two more Memphis runs.
Trela finished the evening with a team-high two RBIs. Ben Brooks tallied a pair of hits, while Hennemann also had a multi-hit effort in a 2-for-4 performance with two runs scored and added an RBI.
The Tigers return to action and continue their season-opening home stand with a three-game set against Southern Illinois this weekend. First pitch from FedExPark on Friday is slated for 4 p.m.
