Tigers split matches to open weekend

TUCSON, Ariz. – Memphis women's tennis etched its first dual-match victory of the young season after splitting a pair of matches against Arizona and Northern Arizona Friday afternoon.
The Tigers (1-3) dropped the day's first match against the Wildcats, but picked up a 4-2 win against NAU to end the day.
"Today presented a big challenge for us with two very quality opponents in one day," head coach Hayden Perez said. "Arizona proved to be a little too strong on the big points. Everywhere I turned we were at 40-40, the level was high and the games were very competitive. Northern Arizona was solid too. I'm proud of the efforts from everyone. We fought hard and came out ahead."
Despite a strong rally in doubles play in the first match, the home team outlasted the Tigers in a pair of tiebreaks to take the opening doubles point.
In singles, Lina Hohnhold recorded a victory on court 5, but the Wildcats found three wins toward the top of the lineup to claim the match.
In the second contest of the day, the Tigers struck first with early momentum in doubles. After a loss on court 3, sophomore duo Laura Bente and Alisha Reayer evened the doubles point with a 6-3 win at the top spot. Katherine Cao and Hannah Davies then clinched on court 2 with a 6-4 victory.
In singles, Hohnhold turned in her second win of the day with a 6-1, 6-0 straight-set decision. The Lumberjacks picked up their first point on court 1, but Memphis answered right back when Aleks Topalovic collected a 6-4, 6-4 win.
NAU had one more comeback bid in sight after a win on court 4, but Bente silenced the rally with a straight-set victory to clinch the match for the Tigers.
Memphis will return to action Sunday at Arizona State. First serve from Tempe is set for 11 a.m. (CT).
