Tigers fall to ECU to open weekend

NEW ORLEANS, La. – In its first league matchup of the season, Memphis women's tennis dropped a 4-2 decision to ECU Saturday afternoon in a neutral-site contest on the campus of Tulane University.
After dropping the doubles point, the Tigers (1-4) offered a rally at the bottom of the singles lineup, but the Pirates (2-2) took wins at three of the top four spots.
"Today was a great match with ECU. They played a little better in doubles and out competed us at some positions," Head Coach Hayden Perez said.
ECU was first off in doubles on court 2. Memphis duo Katherine Cao and Hannah Davies evened the opening point on court 3, before ECU claimed the top spot and took an early 1-0 lead.
In singles, Lina Hohnhold won her third consecutive match with a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Katherine Cao then followed suit with a 6-2, 6-1 win and gave Memphis a 2-1 lead.
ECU responded at the top of the line up with straight-set decisions on courts 3, 4 and 1 for their second-straight win.
The Tigers return to the court Sunday to face Tulane with first serve set for noon.
"We are a young team that has a lot of growing to do, but I am confident this group will do just that," Perez added. "We have a great opportunity in front of us tomorrow as we take on Tulane. It is anther chance to prove ourselves and we are looking forward to it."
