Tigers Drop Series Opener at Tulane

Green Wave scores nine unanswered runs to take down Tigers
NEW ORLEANS, La. – Memphis took an early 1-0 lead before allowing nine unanswered runs to lose 9-1 to Tulane Friday night at Turchin Stadium. The Tigers (17-32, 3-15 AAC) will try to rebound with Jonathan Bowlan on the mound Saturday at 2 p.m.
Things started well, as Memphis jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Designated hitter Nick Vaage ripped an RBI double into the gap in right-center to score first baseman Kyle Ouellette. The Tigers first baseman raced home from first base after he walked with one out.
After Memphis took the 1-0 lead in the second, it was all Tulane.
The Green Wave quickly tied it up, with a solo home run to right field by designated hitter Grant Matthews in the bottom of the second inning.
Tulane hit two more home runs, by Grant Witherspoon and Ty Johnson, in the third inning to extend the lead out to 4-1.
The Green Wave scored another run in the fourth to extend the lead to 5-1, ending Connor Alexander's day on the mound.
Tulane capped things off with one run in the sixth and three more in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
Alexander started and pitched 3 2/3 innings with five strikeouts. Danny Denz pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief. Joshua Scheer, Taylor Bobo and Drew Talley finished out the game on the mound.
