Jonathan Bowlan strikes out school record 18 batters in win
TAMPA, Fla. – Jonathan Bowlan went the distance for the first time in his career and struck out a school record 18 batters in an 8-2 Memphis win over No. 20 USF. Bowlan allowed just two runs on four hits in nine innings with 18 strikeouts and no walks.
The 18 strikeouts set not only a Memphis record, but also an American Athletic Conference record. Additionally, the 18 strikeouts are the most this season by a pitcher in Division I baseball.
It was obvious early in the game that Bowlan was capable of something special Saturday at USF Baseball Stadium, striking out five of the first six batters he faced.
The only hiccup Bowlan had was in the third inning, allowing a pair of two-out runs.
After the third inning, it was all Bowlan. He dominated the Bulls' lineup, retiring 18-straight batters until allowing a two-out single in the ninth. Bowlan struck out the side three times, in the second, fourth and sixth innings.
All 18 of his strikeouts were swinging, including the final out of the game to break the program record and secure the complete-game win.
The complete-game performance is the first by a Memphis pitcher since Matt Ferguson against Tulane in 2016.
The Memphis offense supported Bowlan well, scoring eight runs on eight hits. The Tigers scored four in the fifth and never looked back, tacking on runs in the sixth, seventh and ninth innings.
Trailing 2-0 going to the fifth, the Tiger bats woke up in a big way and scord four two-out runs to take a 4-2 lead. Nick Vaage started the inning with a single and Jason Santana was hit by a pitch to put two runners on base.
With two outs, Memphis went to work. Carlos Williams lined an RBI single to right field that scored Vaage for the first run. Colton Neel followed with a second-straight RBI single to tie the game up.
Tyler Webb came through with the go-ahead hit, slashing a third-straight RBI single. After Webb's single, Neel scampered home on a wild pitch to make the Tigers' lead 4-2.
Vaage finished with a big day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double, one RBI and one run scored. Neel also had a multiple-hit game, going 2-for-5.
With Bowlan cruising on the mound, the Memphis offense continued to add to the lead. Memphis tacked on a run in the top of the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Ouellette.
The Tigers scored two more runs in the seventh, without even putting a ball into play. The inning featured three walks and two hit batters to extend the lead to 7-2.
Alec Trela added the exclamation point to the day, smashing a solo home run in the top of the ninth.
Memphis will have a big opportunity on Sunday, with the chance to go for a series win over No. 20 USF at 11 a.m. (CT).
