Memphis uses makeshift lineup in narrow loss
TAMPA, Fla. – Memphis came up just short, 3-2, in a gutsy performance against No. 20 USF Sunday. The Tigers were forced to use a makeshift lineup, as numerous players and staff members were stricken with a foodborne illness.

Tyler Webb, the Tigers regular center fielder, made his first career start at shortstop. Backup catcher Josh Rooker started at second base, while Kyle Ouellette moved across the diamond to play third base.

Despite a depleted roster and shuffled lineup, Memphis came out swinging and grabbed a 1-0 lead. Ouellette, starting at third base for the first time, lined an RBI single up the middle to drive in Colton Neel for the first run of the game.

Hunter Smith, making a surprise start on the mound, got out of a big jam in the third inning. He walked back-to-back hitters with two outs but was able to get a fly out to end the inning.

Smith got out of another big jam in the fifth inning, striking out his seventh batter of the game to end a bases-loaded threat. The seven strikeouts set a new career high for Smith.

In all, Smith pitched five scoreless innings and registered a career-high seven strikeouts in his first start of the season.

The Bulls pulled ahead in the sixth inning on three hits off of reliever Blake Bennett. USF started the inning with back-to-back singles before an error on the makeshift infield allowed the first run.

A two-run single to left field drove in the go-ahead runs and made the score 3-1.

The Tigers did not quit though, getting a run back in the eighth inning to trim the lead to 3-2. Carlos Williams doubled, advanced to third base on an error and scored on a balk. The Tigers had two runners in scoring position with two outs but a strikeout ended the threat.

Riley Cabral gave Memphis a chance to rally, pitching two scoreless innings of relief with five strikeouts.

Memphis will return to action at home against UConn on Friday, May 4.
