Memphis and No. 25 UCF Split Doubleheader Friday

Tigers and Knights to play rubber game Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Tigers exploded for a season-high seven-run inning and pulled out a 9-0 win over No. 25 UCF to split a doubleheader Friday at FedExPark. Memphis (9-18, 1-4 AAC) lost the first game of the doubleheader, 7-1, to the UCF Knights.
The teams will square off in the rubber match of the series Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Memphis is looking for its first series win since Opening Weekend against Western Kentucky.
Kyle Ouellette went 3-for-4 with two runs score in the second game of the doubleheader. He finished the day with four total hits. Tyler Webb and Cale Hennemann each had three hits during the day.
GAME 1
Memphis and UCF were knotted in a closely-contested battle for the first eight innings of Game 1 before the Knights blew it open in the ninth to win 7-1.
Alex Hicks got into and out of trouble in the top of the second, but UCF did manage to take a 1-0 lead. The inning consisted of two walks, a wild pitch and a hit batter. Hicks used back-to-back strikeouts to get out of the bases-loaded jam.
Hicks finished with six innings pitched, allowing just one run on three hits with a career-high nine strikeouts.
The Tigers tied the game up in the sixth but would have a liked to get more out of the inning. Hennemann started the sixth inning with a leadoff triple and Kyle O'Keefe drove him in with an RBI single to tie the game up 1-1. Memphis loaded the bases but a double play ended the inning.
UCF retook the lead in the eighth and it was another bases-loaded walk to drive in the go-ahead run.
With the game still just 2-1 going to the ninth, the Knights put the game away with a five-run ninth inning. UCF used four walks and three hits in the inning.
GAME 2
The Tigers led for the majority of Game 2, but a big sixth inning put the Tigers ahead for good.
Riley Cabral battled through six innings and struck out a career-high nine batters. He did not allow a run on four hits and three walks.
Memphis grabbed its first lead of the series in the bottom of the third when Kyle O'Keefe tripled off of the center field wall to drive in Cale Hennemann.
The Tigers doubled the lead in the fourth with an unearned run to go up 2-0. Kyle Ouellette singled to start the inning and Josh Rooker reached on an error to put two runners on base. The runners advanced on a wild pitch and Ouellette scored on a sacrifice fly by Colton Neel.

Hunter Smith pitched two scoreless innings with three strikeouts and Takoda Metoxen pitched a scoreless ninth inning to close out the game.
