Memphis Loses Late to No. 5 Auburn 5-4

Tigers unable to hang onto 4-1 lead
AUBURN, Ala. – Memphis held a seventh-inning lead but could not hold off a late rally by No. 5 Auburn and lost, 5-4, Wednesday at Plainsman Park. The Tigers (6-11) were up 4-1 before Auburn scored three runs in the seventh and one run in the eighth.
Danny Denz started and battled for five innings, allowing just one run on three hits. He managed to get out of trouble on multiple occasions and used inning-ending double plays in the second and third innings.
Memphis took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, doing all of the damage with two outs. Jason Santana got it started with a two-out single up the middle before Kyle O'Keefe walked to put two runners on. Colton Neel delivered an RBI single to right field to start the scoring.
Auburn knotted it up quickly with a run in the bottom of the second. Denz walked the bases loaded with one out and an infield single tied the game up 1-1. Denz managed to get out of the jam with a 6-4-3 double play.
Memphis retook the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth inning. Alec Trela and Kyle Ouellette started the inning with singles and Santana walked to load the bases with one out. O'Keefe worked a bases-loaded walk to give the Tigers the lead back.
After a pitching change, Neel drove in his second run of the game with a sacrifice fly to right field that made the score 3-1.
Joshua Scheer came out of the bullpen in the sixth inning and struck out the side swinging to keep the Tigers lead intact.
Memphis added a run to its lead in the seventh on an RBI single by Hennemann to drive in Webb but the 4-1 lead would be short-lived.
Auburn scored three runs to knot the game up 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh. Most of the damage was self-inflicted though as there were two walks, two wild pitches, two balks and one error in the inning.
In the bottom of the eighth, Auburn scored the winning run to take the game 5-4.
Memphis will continue its six-day road trip, traveling to Jacksonville, Fla. to take on North Florida for a three-game weekend series.
