Mar 16, 2018 | Baseball
Riley Cabral pitched seven strong innings in loss
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Memphis and North Florida starting pitchers Riley Cabral and Frank German went toe-to-toe on the mound, but it was German and the Ospreys that came out on top, 4-1, Friday night at Harmon Stadium.
The Tigers (6-12) were able to mount a rally in the ninth, scratching across a run and loading the bases but were unable to get the tying runs across.
Cabral pitched seven innings for Memphis, allowing just two runs on four hits. He struck out five batters and walked two.
North Florida grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third after starting the inning with a leadoff double. The Ospreys advanced the runner to third and then drove him in with a two-out RBI single to go up 1-0.
Cabral settled in after the third-inning run, putting up scoreless frames through the seventh inning.
The Ospreys managed to extend the lead out to 4-0 in the eighth. The inning started with a walk, a balk and an error on a pickoff attempt before the Tigers went to Blake Bennett out of the bullpen. A sacrifice fly made the score 2-0, before a triple and a double drove in the third run. An RBI groundout finished off the inning at 4-0.
Memphis started the top of the ninth with back-to-back walks to chase German out of the game. Kyle Ouellette drove in the Tigers only run of the game with a single to center field.
Jonathan Bowlan will take the mound for Memphis in the second game of the series with North Florida on Saturday at 1:05 p.m.
