Memphis loses late to drop series to Cincinnati
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Jonathan Bowlan dominated Cincinnati for seven strong innings but it wasn't enough as the Bearcats scored one run in the eighth and one in the ninth to win 2-1 Sunday in the series finale at FedExPark. The Tigers (25-23, 6-12 AAC) will host UT Martin at USA Stadium in Millington for Military Appreciation night Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
Bowlan struck out a career-high nine batters in 7 1/3 innings pitched and the only blemish on his line through the first seven innings was a two-out walk in the sixth inning.
The sophomore right-hander completely befuddled the Bearcats' lineup, allowing only two balls to even leave the infield. He struck out the side in the top of the first and his first and never even had a three-ball count until the fifth inning.
In all, Bowlan faced 25 batters and recorded five outs in the air and eight on the ground to go with his nine strikeouts. He finished with two walks and just the one hit allowed.
Both starting pitchers had strong outings but Tigers senior Chris Carrier broke up the shutout with a solo home run to leadoff the bottom of the sixth inning that gave Memphis a 1-0 lead.
The no-hitter and shutout were lost in the eighth inning after an infield pop up fell in for a single. After Bowlan was lifted from the game, reliever Colton Hathcock allowed a two-out double to tie the game up 1-1.
The Bearcats took the lead in the ninth inning after back-to-back two-out walks and an RBI single to right field.
