Jonathan Bowlan dominant for third-straight outing
GREENVILLE, N.C. – Memphis had the bases loaded three different times and left 12 runners on base in a 3-2 loss to East Carolina in 11 innings Sunday at Clark-LeClair Stadium. Jonathan Bowlan was outstanding yet again, throwing 7 2/3 innings allowing just two unearned runs.
The Tigers (27-25, 7-14 AAC) have just four regular-season games remaining, hosting Murray State Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. and Tulane for the final weekend series at FedExPark Thursday through Saturday.
Bowlan was absolutely dominant, throwing his third-straight outing of seven-plus innings. He struck out five batters and didn't walk anyone.
Memphis had the bases-loaded with one out three separate times during the game but couldn't take advantage of any of the opportunities. In the end the Tigers left 12 runners on base, including seven left in scoring position.
Memphis took a 1-0 lead in the third after a clutch two-out single by Brandon Grudzielanek to drive in Tyler Webb, who had doubled. Webb was one of three Tigers to finish with two hits in the game.
Carlos Williams started the top of the fifth inning with an infield single but a failed attempt to sacrifice him into scoring position derailed the inning.
Directly following the failed sacrifice bunt attempt, East Carolina took a 2-1 lead after a lead-off error started the bottom of the fifth. A double put two runners into scoring position and back-to-back sacrifice flies gave the Pirates a 2-1 lead. Both of the runs were unearned.
Memphis had a great opportunity to jump back in front after loading the bases with one out in the top of the sixth. ECU made a pitching change and the reliever got a strikeout and fly ball to end the inning.
The Tigers had another chance to get on the board in the top of the seventh after Williams started the inning with a double to left field. He was sacrificed to third base but no one could drive him in to tie the game.
Memphis tied the game up 2-2 in the ninth inning after Webb singled up the middle to score Kyle O'Keefe who had worked a walk. The Tigers left two runners on base to end the inning though.
ECU managed to load the bases off of a combination of relievers Blake Bennett and Alex Hicks. Bennett took the loss and fell to 2-1 this season.
