Tigers’ seven runs on eight hits not enough

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Memphis and No. 9 Arkansas combined 23 runs on 23 hits as the Razorbacks won 16-7 Tuesday at Baum Stadium. The Tigers (21-16) and Razorbacks (30-8) will square off again Wednesday at Dickey-Stephens Park in North Little Rock.

Andy Bowman blasted the Tigers into an early lead with a three-run home run in the top of the first inning. Bowman's two-out bomb was hit to straight-away center and scored Chris Carrier and Alec Trela.

Arkansas brought home three runs in the bottom of the second to tie the game up off of Memphis starting pitcher Jonathan Bowlan. The Razorbacks had three hits, including two doubles in the inning.

Bowlan walked the bases loaded in the third and the Razorbacks made him pay. A three-run triple followed the three-straight walks to make the score 6-3. An RBI single made the score 7-3 and ended Bowlan's day.

Taylor Bobo came out of the bullpen and got the Tigers out of the inning without any more damage in the inning.

Memphis mounted a big rally in the top of the fifth to tie the game up 7-7. Tyler Webb broke up the streak of seven unanswered runs by the Razorbacks with a solo home run to start the ining.

After a pair of singles and a hit batter loaded the bases, Arkansas went to the bullpen and Zach Schritenthal greeted the reliever with a base-clearing double to knot the game up 7-7.

Arkansas quickly got the lead back after a lead-off triple in the bottom of the fifth. The go-ahead run came home on a one-out single up the middle.

The Tigers were nearly out of the inning but three-straight two-out hits extended the Razorbacks' lead to 11-7.

Arkansas put the game to bed with five more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to lead 16-7.

Grudzielanek and Trela both had a pair of hits in the game. Bowman and Schritenthal each drove in three runs apiece.
