Chris Carrier accounts for Tigers’ only hit in 2-0 loss
NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – 24 hours after playing a game with 23 combined runs on 23 combined hits at Baum Stadium, it was a drastically different story Wednesday at Dickey-Stephens Park. No. 9 Arkansas edged out Memphis 2-0 and held the Tigers to just one hit in the ballgame.
The loss dropped the Tigers to 21-17 overall and 1-8 over the last nine games. The grueling stretch against ranked opponents continues this weekend as Memphis hosts USF for a three-game weekend series at FedExPark.
Arkansas scored the only runs of the game on a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Memphis starting pitcher Alex Hicks was solid otherwise, pitching six innings with six strikeouts and allowing just the two runs on six hits. Relievers Blake Bennett and Colton Hathcock each pitched hitless innings in relief.
The Tigers had just two base runners in the game, when Chris Carrier reached in the fourth and in the seventh. The senior outfielder walked in the fourth for the Tigers' first base runner of the game.
Carrier broke up the no-hit bid with a bunt single with one out in the top of the seventh inning. Carrier's hit allowed the Tigers to bring the tying run to the plate with one out. He was picked off to end the inning though, ending the Tigers only real threat of the game.
