Tigers set FedExPark attendance record of 2,188 during Sunday’s game
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis and Tennessee squared off in a series-deciding game in front of a stadium record attendance of 2,188 Sunday at FedExPark, with the Volunteers coming out on top 10-0. The three-game series set another facility record, attracting 4,793 fans throughout the weekend.
The Tigers dug an early hole with a shaky top of the second inning when Tennessee tagged them for seven runs, six coming against starting pitcher Connor Alexander. The Volunteers slashed four doubles against the junior right-hander before his day ended.
Memphis turned to the bullpen and freshman Tommy Morren entered the game, allowing one more Tennessee run in the second inning. Morren went on to log two innings and allowed just the one run on five hits.
Morren got into a jam in the top of the fourth with two runners on and two outs. Memphis called on reliever Takoda Metoxen who was able to get out of the jam with a groundout. The freshman pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings.
Memphis used a combination of four other pitchers to finish out the game, James Muse, Hunter Smith, Blake Bennett, Alex Smith and Colton Neel.
Trent Turner and Kyle O'Keefe each finished the game 1-for-3 and Turner had a double in the fifth inning.
The Tigers' season opening home stand will continue when they welcome Illinois State to FedExPark for a three-game weekend series Feb. 24-26. The RedBirds are 2-1 after opening the season at a tournament hosted by Austin Peay.
