Memphis used a three-run sixth to take the series opener
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis was opportunistic in rallying for a 5-4 win over Illinois State in the series opener Friday night at FedExPark. The Tigers (2-2) capitalized on four consecutive walks as part of a three-run sixth inning to grab the win.
Sophomore Alex Hicks was brilliant in relief for the second time this season. He came into the game in the second inning and pitched five innings, allowing just one run on three hits with two strikeouts to earn in the win. For the season he has pitched nine innings and allowed just one run.
Junior Colton Hathcock rebounded nicely in his second appearance of the season. He pitched three scoreless innings to earn his first career save.
Illinois State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, taking advantage of the wind blowing straight out to centerfield and blasting a two-run homer. Tigers' starting pitcher Tyler Walton was roughed up in that first inning.
Memphis cut into the lead with a couple of runs in the third inning. Redshirt freshman first baseman Nick Vaage got the inning started with his first career hit, a solo home run to right field to put the Tigers on the board.
With one out, Zach Schritenthal walked and Colton Neel singled to put two runners on base. A wild pitch moved the runners into scoring position and Chris Carrier drove in Schritenthal with a sacrifice fly to make the score 3-2.
The Redbirds extended the lead with a run in the fifth after a two-out triple and a wild pitch.
The Tigers went to work in the sixth and grabbed the lead for good, scoring three runs on just one hit. Freshman shortstop Alec Trela started the inning with a double off the centerfield wall. After Trela's double the wheels came off for Illinois State. Tyler Webb reached on an error and then both runners advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch.
Trent Turner drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to left field to make the score 4-3. Then with two outs, Redbird pitching walked four straight batters to drive in two more runs and give Memphis a 5-4 lead.
Hathcock was dominant at times in the final three innings of work, striking out three batters.
Memphis will go for its first series win of the season Saturday at 2 p.m. at FedExPark. The series final is Sunday at 1 p.m.
