Memphis Rallies from 11-Run Deficit to Win in Extra Innings
Feb 25, 2017 | Baseball
Tigers will go for the sweep Sunday at 1 p.m.
The comeback is the largest in the Daron Schoenrock era of Memphis baseball.
After a rocky start that saw Illinois State score one in the first inning, seven in the second and three in the third, The Tigers mounted a furious comeback. Memphis chipped away initially, scoring two runs in the third inning before exploding for seven more in the fifth, one in the eighth, one in the ninth and the winning run in the 11th.
Memphis was down to its final out, trailing 11-10 in the bottom of the ninth, before Jason Santana doubled to left-center field and Zach Schritenthal singled to drive in the game-tying run.
Trent Turner started the 11th inning with a walk before Kyle O'Keefe reach on an error. The ninth-inning heroes then came to the plate, Santana sacrificed the runners into scoring position and Schritenthal was intentionally walked to load the bases.
Colton Neel worked a full-count, bases loaded walk to drive in Turner and end the game.
The relief pitching duo of James Muse and Jonathan Bowlan were outstanding. Muse came into the game to start the fifth inning and went on to pitch 3 1/3 scoreless innings with four strikeouts.
For Bowlan, this marks a second-consecutive weekend with a dominant relief outing. He picked up where Muse left off and pitched 3 2/3 innings allowing just two hits and striking out three batters. He earned his first win of the season to go along with last weekend's save. He has yet to allow a run in 6 2/3 innings pitching this season.
The 12-run scoring output saw several Memphis batters have a good day at the plate. Schritenthal finished 1-for-3 with three walks, two runs scored and one RBI. Neel was also 1-for-3 with four walks. Chris Carrier had his first multiple-hit game of the season, going 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.
Tyler Webb went 3-for-5, Kyle O'Keefe went 1-for-3 and drove in three runs and Santana was 2-for-5 with one RBI and two runs scored.
Memphis will go for the sweep of the Redbirds Sunday at 1 p.m. at FedExPark.
