Memphis Evens Series Behind Crosby & Bowlan
Feb 18, 2017 | Baseball
The Tigers got great pitching and timely hitting to beat the Volunteers 4-1
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis starting pitcher Drew Crosby and reliever Jonathan Bowlan combined to hold Tennessee to just one run on five hits and lead Memphis to a 4-1 win in front of 1,489 at FedExPark Saturday.
The pitching tandem was supported by first baseman Trent Turner, who scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch in the fourth inning and later provided some insurance with a two-run homer in the eighth.
The exciting rubber match of the series will be Sunday at 1 p.m. and the Tigers will look to junior right-hander Connor Alexander to start on the mound.
Crosby allowed a solo home run in the top of the first and then went on a dominant stretch of retiring 14 straight batters. He finished with six innings pitched and six strikeouts to earn his first career win.
Bowlan was lights out coming out of the bullpen to earn the save. He pitched three scoreless innings, allowing two hits and one walk.
The Tigers' defense came up big in the top of the first, preventing a second run from scoring on a single. Left fielder Colton Neel made a nice relay throw to second baseman Zach Schritenthal, who gunned down a runner at the plate to end the frame.
Memphis grabbed the lead in the second, in large part to freshman Alec Trela's lead-off double. After a walk by Turner and a Colton Neel sacrifice bunt, catcher Jason Santana tied the game up with an RBI groundout.
Turner gave Memphis a 2-1 lead, scoring from third base on a wild pitch.
Memphis called on Bowlan in to start the seventh inning of a one-run ballgame and the sophomore delivered, keeping the Vols in check for the final three frames.
Junior centerfielder Tyler Webb was 2-for-4 in the game and Zach Schritenthal and Carlos Williams each added hits.
Memphis will be looking to win its first three-game series over an SEC opponent since the 2013 season against Missouri at FedExPark.
