May 15, 2016 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS, La. – Memphis and No. 15 Tulane were tied going to the bottom of the seventh inning before the Green Wave scored four runs to take the game, 9-5, and the series Sunday at Turchin Stadium.
Junior centerfielder Darien Tubbs was 4-for-4 with three doubles in the game to lead Memphis offensively. The four-hit game is his second this season and the three doubles in a game is a career high for him as well.
The Tigers (17-35, 8-13 American) jumped out to a 2-0 lead halfway through the second inning before Tulane scored four in the bottom of the second and one more in the fifth to take a 5-2 lead. Memphis fought back to score three runs in the top of sixth to tie the game up 5-5 but Tulane put together the big seventh inning to put the game away.
Memphis starter Jonathan Bowlan was lifted from the game in the second inning after allowing four runs on three hits with two walks. Connor Alexander came on in relief and was solid until the big seventh inning. Alexander tossed 4 2/3 innings and allowed five runs on seven hits. Colton Neel, Trey McNickle and Nolan Blackwood pitched the final 1 2/3 innings.
Tubbs and Zach Schritenthal started the game with back-to-back walks but a double play nearly neutralized the first-inning threat. Jacob Elliott worked the third walk of the inning to put runners on the corners with two outs.
Brandon Grudzielanek salvaged the inning when he legged out an infield single drive in Tubbs from third base. The close play at first base prompted Tulane head coach David Pierce to come out of the dugout to dispute the call. The second-year coach was then ejected from the game in the top of the first inning.
Memphis added to its lead with another two-out RBI as Tubbs singled through the right side of the infield to score Chris Carrier from second base after he was hit by a pitch and stole second base.
Tulane blew the game open with a four-run second inning. The Green Wave loaded the bases with one out in the second after a double and back-to-back walks.
A two-run single by Jake Rogers would have tied the game but an errant throw allowed a third run to come home to give Tulane the lead. A two-out single by Stephen Alemais capped of the inning and made the score 4-2.
Connor Alexander was called on out of the bullpen and got Memphis out of the inning. The sophomore went on to pitch…
